Novy Urengoy Two reasons to celebrate in Russia’s Gas Capital
Kassel in Northern Hesse and Novy Urengoy in Western Siberia are more than 5,000 kilometres apart, yet the two cities are firmly linked in many ways. One of these links is Wintershall Dea. The company, which has one of its two headquarters in Kassel, has been active in the region since 2003 and produces natural gas and gas condensate there together with its Russian partner Gazprom.
In 2020 Novy Urengoy is celebrating its 45th anniversary. What began in 1975 with a settlement for workers pioneering natural gas production in Western Siberia, has now become a vibrant gas metropolis with more than 110,000 inhabitants. Wintershall Dea and the City of Kassel are congratulating their partner city on its birthday with a musical gift. To mark the anniversary, Kassel musicians from the Louis Spohr String Quartet have recorded a classical concert. The performance with works by Mozart, Borodin, Mendelssohn, Bartók and Piazzolla was broadcast on local television in Novy Urengoy on 5 September.
“In a region where a harsh climate and tough living and working conditions prevail, the founding fathers of Novy Urengoy have done an incredible job in creating a modern city in this area. Today’s residents of Novy Urengoy are continuing this work and have further developed this location into a pillar of the global gas industry – a city that reliably supplies Russia and Europe with gas,” says Thilo Wieland, Wintershall Dea’s Executive Board member responsible for Russia.
The city’s birthday coincides with another important anniversary: this year Novy Urengoy and Kassel are celebrating 15 years of collaboration between the two cities. The project was established on the initiative of Wintershall Dea, which has closely accompanied and supported the city partnership to this day. This is something that goes without saying for the company, which also takes its neighbourly responsibilities seriously in the regions where it operates. Since 2005, Kassel and Novy Urengoy have maintained an intensive exchange at the municipal level and have been working closely together in the education and cultural fields. The spectrum here ranges from pupil research collaborations and regular online conferences to annually alternating summer and winter schools for administrative staff from both cities.
Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the partners are continuing the virtual exchange and have already agreed on joint projects for the coming year. All those involved in Kassel and Novy Urengoy are in agreement: despite the current challenges and travel restrictions, the collaboration between the cities is based on a firm foundation. Nevertheless, everyone is already looking forward to meeting one another again in person as soon as possible.
„Novy Urengoy is a pillar of the global gas industry — a city that reliably supplies Russia and Europe with gas.“
